ITunes freezes when connected to iPod and unfreezes when unplugged?

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and iTunes 10.3.1 64bit. I have an 8gb iPod touch 3rd gen. Whenever I plug in my iPod, iTunes launches and then freezes. When I unplug my iPod it unfreezes and is OK. My device is not jail-broken. I have already tried restoring my iPod and reinstalling iTunes. Is there anything I can do to fix it? Why are iPods on Windows so buggy? I had one of the original Intel Macbooks and never had this problem.
